I read about the handicap principle in the Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins, c.f. (Dawkins 1976) and it has always intrigued me. The idea that animals might be honest in their communication because it is too costly to lie is fascinating. While it explains a number of phenomena, I am surprised that it was claimed to be the only explanation for honest signalling. Is this a bit of a stretch, propped up, only so it can be knocked down? I am excited to read this paper and find out.
At a deeper level signaling is usually unlikely to arise in competitive conditions. And these are also the settings in which agent are rewarded for deceptive behavior. So Iām also interested in any research shedding light on ways that allows for honest signaling can emerge under such conditions.

Some thoughts
This paper provides some insights about deception and honesty in signaling. The main point that agents/animals may have incentives to lie about thier traits. I think the different scenarios and mechanism might be a few baselines to considering how deception and or honesty might evolve in competitive environments.
It seems that this can be explored in a sugarscape type simulation where agents know thier own traits but may wish to lie about them to thier mate to increase thier chances of mating. So deception might lead to a higher fitness in the short term but in the long term it might lead to a lower fitness.
Since the different mechanism outlined in the paper are not mutually exclusive, it might be interesting to see how they interact in a simulation.
